6 things I’d Like to See in the Kusaba Forks

I’ve being using Kusaba all the way back since it was still called Trevorchan, and thus have gotten used to its quirks and bugs. However, now that Kusaba has forked into three different projects (KusabaX, Kusaba-2 and Serissa), it’ll be interesting to see the directions each one takes - whether they’ll add new features, clean up the code, etc. This also gives a good chance to implement some things that that people wanted but Trevor wasn’t bothered to add in the end. Here is my wishlist, born out of experience:

1) Email reported posts - One thing I find annoying is logging in and seeing reported posts pending review, but have been sitting there for quite a while. If I’d known there was a dodgy post, I would of logged into the admin panel sooner.

2) Add thumbnails to the RSS feeds whenever a new image is posted - The RSS feeds are a useful way to check for rule-breaking posts, however not being able to see what the posted image is does hamper things - I don’t have the time to check every image posted on MC, and seeing how the admin(s) have to login to see reported posts instead of being notified by email…

3) Speaking of RSS feeds, why is the modlog RSS feed available for anyone to download it?

4) Modify board options on creation - It’s annoying having to add a board and then go to the board options section to change the default settings. Why not load up the default settings on the board creation screen?

5) Have the spam.txt editable from within the management panel - This one is pretty much self-explanatory. I shouldn’t have to explain to someone how annoying it is to download the spam.txt file via FTP, edit it and then re-upload it.

6) A simpler installation process - This one will help adoption/conversion rates to the new forks, as the original one is a fucking pain in the ass, and a bitch to sort out if you fuck up and don’t know much about databases.

tl;dr: Wakaba is made of sufficient types of fail that I simply don’t want to have to deal with.

    It’s types of fail include:

    a) being coded in perl, which isn’t as widely supported by hosts as PHP
    b) only having support for CGI-gateway, meaning it will invariably be slower than mod_perl and mod_php
    b) not having multi-board support…
    c) …meaning it’s fucking annoying managing multiple boards (duh)
    d) being limited in it’s functionality. If you want anything more than a very basic imageboard, or don’t want to spend over 9000 hours setting the bloody config file up the first time (yes, you don’t need to change all the settings on the first go, but many will and it’s a shlep), best not to use Wakaba
    e) got a bunch of elitist pricks for a fanbase
