It's actually quite lovely to see the mist roll over from the sea. Just not so nice when you're stuck in rush-hour traffic in the mornings :)

This isn't a terribly interesting city to view, but it's where I live, so here's some pictures I took from the top of the parking garage I park at for work. I took these one morning when I arrived earlier than normal; I was going to walk around downtown after work to get some more up-close pictures, but when I got to work I heard Obama was visiting town, so I figured it was best not to be some wandering long hair hippy with a camera that day, with the number of helicopters I heard overhead.

This picture is of downtown- all of it. I have read that it used to be twice as big as it is now back in the 50s (in fact, OKC was the largest city in the world - by land area - at the time. it is now the largest city is the US that is not also a county), but they invited I M Pei to redesign the area in the 60s, and most of what he did involved tearing shit down. He did design a nice garden, though.

The tower to the left is still under construction; the missing windows are where the just-removed cranes were attached. It doesn't seem it from this angle, but it is about 50% taller than the next tallest building; it is farther away and much wider as well so it hides its size well.

From the clock in this picture, I can see when you took them. :)

What is most fascinating to me is the quality of the light in all of the pictures. The sky is not dark, and the early morning light is enough to reveal details, yet lights on buildings and in the street still cast a glow as if it were night. Very cool.

I think that clock is probably broken, or at least not accounting for DST. It was about 07:15 when I took these.

Unfortunately, the sun doesn't rise until pretty late here; 6:30 at the earliest, due to DST. I live 45 minutes from work, and am not a morning person, so that makes it pretty tough on me.

The new tower has these vertical neon lights in the parts between the larger faces that I got to see a couple times when sunrise was after I got into the downtown area. They look pretty cool.

http://noirlac.tumblr.com/ is a blog that features pixel art. I think some of it is ripped from actual old video or PC games and some of it is original, though it's not cearly labeled which is which. At any rate, you have to search a bit to find pics that have urban themes, but they're almost uniformly awesome.

This is pretty cool. It's a recording of a "demo" showing an urban landscape slowly warping and twisting under the influence of mysterious glowing cubes. If you're unfamiliar, demos originate from the days of 8-bit computers; they were special computer programs designed to show off hackers' mastery of code, usually by displaying impressive graphics and music. As computers have become more powerful, demo makers now usually try to make the most impressive thing within a certain tiny filesize. In this case, the program that made this movie - textures, graphics, music and all - weighs in at around 177KB. That means you could fit two copies of it on one of those old double-density 5.25-inch disks and still have a few kilobytes to spare. Pretty impressive…

Besides the story behind it, that is just cool to watch. The worm formations remind me of the anime Vexille which if you've seen, you know what I'm talking about.

this exact thing crossed my mind when I was posting that actually. The Snowcrash barge constellation thingy was migratory though as far as I recall. Immigrants would use it to cross the pacific, then jump ship.

Oh! Red Star - Winter Orbit (that was the title I think?)

The story by Gibson and Sterling in Mirrorshades, where people latch onto an ailing old Soviet-era satellite to squat it. I've always imagined them sorta added bays and sleeping quarters in a Kowloon fashion.

Just to kindle some more activity here, how about we post some pics of our hometowns. Or, wherever you are at the moment. Preferably ones you took yourself but not necessarily.

This is St. John's, Newfoundland. Most of the pictures you see in postcards are "quaint" images of old timey stuff and a lot of that stuff is cool but in keeping with the theme of this board I wanted to show some pics of her other, more urban side.

The city has changed rapidly in the last few decades. Loads of historic buildings being taken down (and some VERY convenient fires if you follow me) to be replaced by modern stuff and even condos, something I wasn't expecting to see.

It's a pretty old city for North America actually. There's no grid, there was no long term planning and everything was designed for horses and carts on the left hand side and of course, somewhere along the way someone decided that everyone in the Americas was going to switch sides of the road. So getting around downtown is a nightmare, and makes me glad I'm mostly on foot when I'm in town.

not my pic here but EVERYONE captures this view or one from very near this spot; tourists, pro photographers, painters, everyone.

I've been wanting to do an OKC thread for a while, but since I'm only downtown for work, I feel a strong urge to get out of there ASAP when I visit. Once it warms back up more I'll take my camera one day a spend a few hours wandering for this thread.
