Just to kindle some more activity here, how about we post some pics of our hometowns. Or, wherever you are at the moment. Preferably ones you took yourself but not necessarily.

This is St. John's, Newfoundland. Most of the pictures you see in postcards are "quaint" images of old timey stuff and a lot of that stuff is cool but in keeping with the theme of this board I wanted to show some pics of her other, more urban side.

Reminds me of Sacramento, California (except for the snow). A lot of historic (and historic-looking) buildings scattered about with the occasional tallish/modernish building spattered about looking kind of half-hearted and out of place. Sacto's not a bad place, but I don't think I'd want to live there…

The city has changed rapidly in the last few decades. Loads of historic buildings being taken down (and some VERY convenient fires if you follow me) to be replaced by modern stuff and even condos, something I wasn't expecting to see.

It's a pretty old city for North America actually. There's no grid, there was no long term planning and everything was designed for horses and carts on the left hand side and of course, somewhere along the way someone decided that everyone in the Americas was going to switch sides of the road. So getting around downtown is a nightmare, and makes me glad I'm mostly on foot when I'm in town.

not my pic here but EVERYONE captures this view or one from very near this spot; tourists, pro photographers, painters, everyone.

There's a thread of Belfast down the page somewhere, but I'll take a few more pics next time I leave my lolicon love cave here, let you see some other parts.

I lurk constantly and give very little back, so here are some miscellaneous cityscapes from the Stygian depths of my rather harmless media drive.

Yea, further comparison makes it clear that it's Tokyo. Just that building is blocking out most of the Tokyo tower, and obv. it's heavily edited.
>> No. 1078
The ability for Tokyo Tower to be overshadowed by modern skyscrapers is why they're now building an even larger broadcast tower called the Tokyo Sky Tree. Wikipedia it. Haven't checked it out yet, but hoping to see it eventually.

Did see Tokyo Tower briefly. The earthquake last March somehow caused the top of the tower to get bent… you can see it if you look closely.

How about some nice videos of cities? A lot of the photos we post are quite sanitary, empty things. Let's see our cities in motion.

A fascinating and lengthy article about the not-so-shiny side of this desert Disneyland and the people who live there. Highly recommended.

Perhaps the most comical bit of the whole affair was; 'The council also disclosed that Hari had not returned the prize money he received of 2000 pounds.'

Because a weak apology solves it all!

I'm sorry, was anyone who's ever actually been to Dubai under the impression that it was anything but a shithole? It's not "hidden" at all. You can tell the first day off the plane that it's a seedy dictatorship and a fucking horrible place to live.

I think they're just standalone images, the ones you highlighted.

I know for a fact >>909 is just a random picture of Hatsune Miku, and >>910 is actually done by an artist who is famous for doing a lot of these super high detail cityscapes. Reverse image search it and you'll probably find the guy's name.

Photos like these are why I love this board. Their subject matter is perfectly ordinary - both of these are just unassuming normal streets that most people would just pass by without considering them photo-worthy - but in that manner, they capture the life of the city more accurately than opulent buildings or landmark bridges.

This and the previous are Itsukushima Shrine. As you can tell by the last photo, when the tide is down, people can walk up to it, and wedge coins in the cracks in the logs. Made of camphor wood, the current torii at the shrine has stood since 1875! No births or deaths are allowed near the shrine, in order to maintain it's purity.

My dad sent me a picture a while ago, which I'm too hungover to dig for at the moment sorry, of a Torii which was the only thing in it's immediate area to survive an atomic bomb attack and later the only thing in it's immediate area to survive the recent earthquake/tsunami.

I've become pretty atheist in my "old age" <cough> but stuff like that kinda makes me wonder a little.
