Animu thread.

Just finished watching Evangelion Rebuild 1.0. I'm enjoying it a lot, actually think that it's better than the original in some ways, because Shinji is a bit more ballsy. Also the colour palette is darker throughout which makes the mood a lot more steady, as opposed to those retardedly bright sequences with Pen Pen before...

haven't checked out Rebuild yet, I'm kind of on the fence about even starting it, although the temptation is there.

in the past year I've finished Welcome to the NHK, which I liked for the most part.

Finished Gantz which I really enjoyed up to the last quarter or so, which seemed really contrived, and had a confusing non-ending.

I've also started K-on!, Serial Experiments Lain, Gurren Lagann, and Ergo Proxy, but haven't gotten more than half way through any of them.

As far as feature lengths go I really enjoyed Mind Game, which has a really unique visual style.

Go for Rebuild, it's worth it purely for the looks alone.
I feel the first story arc leading to the island retreat was a lot better than the later parts of Welcome to the NHK...

I watch of the ongoing ones this season, can´t really recommend any of them though. Maybe Highschool of the Dead, fun despite fanservice.

Apart from the ongoing season i´m about to finish Cromartie Highschool, which i´ve enjoyed I guess.

Gonna watch the Evangelion rebuilds sometime soon when I can find some time.

Me, I don't think cartoon titties are something terribly bad, but if I wanted to see those, I'd just watch an actual porn anime. When you want it to be with the characters from some specific show, there's bound to be some rule34 fanart for you out there.
I don't mind that there's fanservice in shows like Rosario+Vampire, where the premise and advertising for it make it pretty clear that it's the main selling point. But damn, it's everywhere. Why can't they keep that shit out of my shows about zombie apocalypses, world domination ambitions and robots?
All it does for me is make it really awkward to recommend any anime shows to other people, nevermind watching it together with them, especially when they're female.

The thing is that I get asked for recommendations sometimes. I read manga in public (on the bus, in line at the supermarket etc.), so anyone who gets to know me will sooner or later find out that I'm into this stuff.

Anyone here play dojin games, VNs and all that?
I have to say I'm positively surprised by how much success Recettear has in the west (second-best-selling game on Steam as of now).

I've been trying to get into anime thanks to peer pressure from a friend. So far, Cowboy Bebop, Planetes and Serial Experiments Lain have hit the hardest.

I wouldn't lump Azumanga Daioh in with moeshit like K-on - it's a legitimately good comedy anime, where the characters happen to be female. it predates (some would say it actually led to) the current moe fad.

Railgun was a good anime desperately trying to escape from the moe that it was infected with. Some decent storylines, it really had promise... I love Index too, and it's moe up-the-shitter though, so who knows?

AzuDaioh is NOT moe though. It certainly predates the trend, and I am horrified that newcomers are mistaking it as being in any way like K-on.

I just started watching Railgun the other night. Typically I'm not a fan of the all-young-female-characters kind of anime (apparently referred to as "moe" but I wouldn't know - the only other stuff I really watch is GitS and HSotD), but this one seems to be okay... so far, anyway.

Meh. Why fight it? Either you don't like that sort of stuff and stop watching it, in which case your situation is no different than before. Or you do like it, in which case you've actually gained something.
For a recommendation, check out Perfect Blue, which is one of my favorite anime movies. It's about a pop idol.

>>372
>AzuDaioh is NOT moe
lol, yeah it is. It pretty much defines the genre. You're just saying that cause you like it and the "moe" label has become such a stigma.
>> No. 376
>>375
I don't care about any stigma. Yes, there is a lot of cuteness in Azumanga, but what sets it apart from moe shows is the fact Azumanga Daioh has actual comedy- surreal, weird stuff at times- whereas moe shows are nothing but cute girls doing cute things.

I watched the first season of K-On because I was interested in the musical aspects of it. When I realized that that wasn't really a major part of it, just a minor detail, I lost interest because there was nothing holding it together except for how adorably dumb the girls were. Azumanga kept me watching because I wanted to know wtf is going to happen next.

>what sets it apart from moe shows is the fact Azumanga Daioh has actual comedy
I haven't watched/read K-on, but I know it's supposed to be a comedy show.
So, because you like the humor in Azu more than the humor in K-on means it's a whole 'nother genre?
Then you might as well argue that Strike Witches isn't a moe show because it has somewhat enjoyable action scenes.
>moe shows are nothing but cute girls doing cute things.
...just like Azumanga.
By the way, check out this wikipedia article about 4 panel mangas:

"The end of the 1990s was marked by a drastic increase in four panel comics with a main focus on moe, which are generally called 'moe-yonkoma.' They are considered to have had their breakthrough in 1999, because that was the year in which the hugely successful Azumanga Daioh was serialized."
>> No. 380
Although you might call Azu moe by that definition, it really doesn't fall into the category of stuff like K-on. Contemporary moe seems more to be pedo fanservice.

Talking of contemporary moe, though, I do like Haruhi, etc...
>> No. 382
>>379
I won't argue that Azumanga inspired/created the genre, but it did not itself put the focus on the cuteness. It had a bunch of girls as main characters, which the fans then sexualized; anime creators saw this and ran with it, created the moe genre that exists today.

The comedy in K-On is focused on the cuteness of how the characters act in the situations. Aw, how adorable, she named her guitar and dressed it up for a tea party. Aw, she's clumsy all the time. Like Strike Witches having action, sometimes they slip up and actually manage to play music in K-On. Sometimes.

I would argue that the comedy of Azumanga would work just as well if the characters were male. Moe shows can't make that claim.

>>380
I like Haruhi, too, but the thing that makes it appealing is the sci-fi and LOLDEEP philosophical aspects of it; some of the fanservice in it is parody, but most of it I just suffer through for the good parts. Reading the novels are a good way to skip the fanservice, but it really is adapted well enough that it is worth sitting through.

I'm pretty much the opposite. I rarely keep stuff after I watch it, only like 5% or so. A few selected titles like Evangelion, Akira, Lain, Satoshi Kon movies and so on. Most of it gets deleted right after I'm done with it.
And shows of the current season don't get saved in the first place. I either download the episodes onto a RAM disk or, if I can make the time, watch them via stream as they air.
>> No. 436
I keep my favourites but delete the rest. Most of what I finish watching gets saved, I don't really finish watching the ones I don't love, so they're deleted to save on space.

I used to keep track, but a part of me detests having external references like that. If it doesn't make a huge impact of me, then I'm not going to remember it as much, so therefore I'll remember my favourites without having to check.

There's never really much originality, but I wouldn't fall prey to dismissing an entire season out of hand. Sure, there are bad seasons and good seasons, but I ...enjoy old plots with different art. Apart from the usual neckbeard-appeal romances, Bakuman has never been presented in animated form, and Soredemo Machi looks like a typically interesting SHAFT take on the staple Maid Cafe. Just two random examples taken from this season. If I didn't watch anything that reminded me of something I'd seen before, I'd be stuck in the late 80s and early 90s.
