So if you're on IRC, you probably know that I have an ongoing project to make my daughter's bedroom wall into a giant glow in the dark solar system. I will be showing you how to make one yourself.

This will not be done on the wall itself, but with pieces that can be stuck to the wall with double sided tape and/or sticky putty. This means that it will not be permanent, and should there be the need to move, the entire mural can be removed piece by piece and put back together on a new wall.

The image attached is the basic concept. It is a 16ft wall. The starfield extends 5ft down from the 9ft cieling, and out to both adjacent walls an average of 4 ft on each side. That's 24ft total. 24x5ft = 120 square feet.

The stars are plastic glow in the dark stars that can be found in the toy section at walmart. They are called "stars & nebula", and it takes four of these to cover the area. They cost $3 a package when I bought them.

I will show you how to make the sun, planets, and asteroids yourself as I fumble and fail through the process.

Awesome Integris. Keep us posted on the progress or at the least remember to give a final image.

The sun was made using extra-thick white poster board that I picked up at a craft store. Extra thick is important to keep it from warping. I got the thickest I could find, and the surface is not smooth. It looks like it was pulled directly from a pulp screen.

I drew a circle using the bell reflector for a commercial hanging sodium light, like the ones you find in a school gymnasium. It gives me a circle about two feet in diameter, drawn in pencil.

Now we get to the painting. In order to keep the board from absorbing all of your paint, I recommend sealing it. I used Krylon Matte Finish 1311 (in a spray can) from the specialty paint section in Walmart. The only reason I choose this is because I have it on hand for sealing paints after use, since it has no UV filters to inhibit paint charging. You can also use Patricia Nimcocks Plaid clear acrylic sealer (gloss) CS200305 - also in a spray can. I have tested both of these and find them to be more than sufficient. I recommend using the Matte, since you don't want light reflecting off of your paint. You want it to be hitting it from every possible angle.

I came back about six hours later and covered the circle with Krylon Glowz (spray can) that I picked up at a craft store. I think it cost between $5 and $9 and I used the entire can. I should have waited a day, because the board started to warp. I had to hold the edges down with stuff and let it dry over night. A day after the krylon glowz, I came back with Day Glow Orange paint that I picked up over at GlowInc.com.

http://glowinc.com/detail.aspx?ID=9

I applied this with a rectangular foam sponge I found in the paint section at Walmart, right next to the roller sponge. At first I was skimpy, but I didn't like the result. At that point I got generous with the paint, to make it look more sun-spotty.

I bought the half pint and ended up using about 2/3 of the can. The can cost about $50 (fucking ouch), but the result is spectacular. Now my hands are covered in glowing orange. Tomorrow (maybe) I will seal the entire thing with matte finish and cut out the circle. You could probably make coronal mass ejections if you wanted (notice the shit outside the circle). I made my circle dark. Try drawing yours light so you can cut CMEs from the oversponge.

My overall satisfaction with the current result is 8 out of a 10, because I fucked up and drew that circle too dark. So no coronal mass ejections for me :(
On the bright side, the dark glow was strong enough that it started attracting bugs. One of them was dumb enough to get caught in the paint before it tacked off. Fuck im.

The final picture just doesn't do it justice. I'll mess with this project more later when everything dries. Need some sleep.

well I fucked up and moved the board out into the garage so the house wouldn't smell like acetone. I ended up setting it on its side, and it warped. I brought it back in and set it on the floor with another board on top, and some other stuff on top to try and flatten it out. Seems to have worked well enough, but I'll see.

The sun has now been cut out, but it is warped. I think I'm going to have to put it on a piece of foam-core or coroplast. Something rigid like that. Will check the hobby shops next time I'm there.

Just ordered 3 small bottles of the water-based paints.

One for each color to try out and see how well they work. The solvent based paint ruins tools, and then there is the smell. One time use of tools when I need to do 8 planets is unacceptable. The new paints should be here wednesday or thursday.

Did you know that if you try to upload a PDF to /disc/ it takes you to the frontpage inside of the frame inside of the frame? Also, mediafire is down for maintenance, so I will upload my planets template later. Picture related. The twittersphere is going mad with "OMG RIAA SHUT DOWN MEDIAFIRE BOOHOOHOO." lol

The sun is done. I cut out a piece of foam board from malwart that's slightly smaller then the sun. Used double-sided tape to attach the sun to the board, and some Command Picture Hanging strips to attach the board to the wall. Take two of them and they lock together sort of like velcro, but not. Remove the strip from the back of one of them, and attach it to whatever. Do the same for how many you want on the back of something. Once they're all on, remove the strips from the side that's supposed to stick to the wall, then smack your picture/whatever to the wall. To remove it, just pull and the strips unlock like velcro. The strips can be removed from your picture and wall by grabbing the tab and stretching it about 6 inches (it then pops right off).

just look in the adhesive/hook/tape section over by paint. Note that there may be two sections for paint. Check both of them. These things are so awesome ;_;

Will get some pics later after it finishes charging and the sun goes completely down.

You may notice mercury to the right of the sun. This is from a pre-made set of glow-in-the-dark planets I picked up at hastings. Not at all worth the $15 I paid for them.

I bought some smaller paints to test and see which would be best for the planets. Decided on the Ultra Green, which is now on order. I'm using mostly the Ultra Blue to spritz up my starbase from >>155
This time next week I should be able to get some real work done on the planets.

So I'm in need of a camera that is cheap and will let me manually control the shutter speed so I can take decent images in the dark. Any ideas?

Might be something expensive. I don't know anything about digital cameras though, sorry. My gf collects old film cameras, I can ask her if she knows anything about it.

I think Im about to do something stupid. Going to try and cut open a disposable, see if it has standard roll film, then turn it into a reloadable with variable shutter speed if it does (tape the fucker to a tripod and open/close the shutter myself). If I can't, at least I get to see its guts.
