FAQ

What is Megachan?

Megachan is primarly an imageboard site - an imageboard being a place where people come to post pictures and then discuss them. Invariably, each imageboard will have a specific theme, for example anime, wallpapers or technology. Imageboard sites were started in Japan, and the first
English-language one was 4chan, where most of the Western imageboard culture comes from (and more recently, 7chan).

Where do I start?

Megachan is still relatively quiet and the users are more tolerant of new people, so we won’t react as harshly to mistakes as on other imageboard sites. However it is still best to first read the rest of this FAQ, as well as the rules, to help you understand the culture and how to use the imageboards. Also, there is the Sandbox board for new people where you can experiment and familiarise yourself with how the boards work.

General imageboard overview

Similar to a normaly forum, each imageboard consists of main pages and thread pages. Main pages, as the name suggests, display a summary of the threads. Each thread gets its own page, which can be accessed by clicking on the [Reply] button.

The threads are arranged in descending order based on the last post, just like a normal forum. Thus, the thread with the last reply will appear on the top, as will any thread just created. Each board has a maximum number of pages. As new threads are created and others replied to, old/stale threads are bumped down the board until they are bumped past the last page, where they are then deleted. This helps keep the board fresh.

How to I make a post/thread?

Simply fill out the submission form on the top of each page. If the page you are on is one of the main pages (ie, it displays a summary of all the threads) then a new thread will be created, else the post will be a reply to an existing one. Remember, most boards will require an image when starting a thread. These are imageboards, remember ;) Currently /disc/ is the only board on Megachan that does not require an image when starting a thread.

Where’s the registration page?

There is none as it’s not needed. Imageboards allow anonymous posting, one of the reasons why they are so popular. Basically, you can leave the [Name] field alone - the default name is the word Anonymous.

However, some people like to have a unique identifying name, which is why there is the tripcode system.

What are tripcodes and how do I use them?

Tripcodes are a way of authentication, ie to prevent someone else from ’stealing’ your identity. All you need to do is to add a hash (’#') after your name and a random string of letters and numbers (no spaces). This ‘password’ will be encrypted, and then stored in your browser cookie for later use (if your browser accepts them).

For example, entering User#password into the [Name] field will result in User!ozOtJW9BFA being displayed with the post.

“Sage” (’sah-ge’) comes from the Japanese verb sageru (???) which means “to lower”, while “age” (’ah-ge’) comes from the Japanese verb ageru (???) which means “to raise”. Using sage allows a poster to not bump a thread to the top of the board - in essence they are not happy with a thread and so wish to hasten its deletion by keeping it towards the bottom. To sage a thread, simply type sage into the [Email] field. Easy, no? :)

More info will added as seen fit.
