The subtitle to this book by one Robert C Rodgers is “Being A Wholly Accurate Historical Account Concerning Matters Of Steam, Skullduggery, And The Irresponsible Application Of Reckless Mathematics In The 18th Century,” which should give you an idea of what sort of book we’re looking at here. Arcadia Snips is your typical thief-with-a-heart-of-gold character who gets blackmailed to use her skills to help investigate a murder mystery at the enigmatic Steamwork in the city of Aberwick. Arcadia Snps is a self-published book which can apparently only be got at http://arcadiasnips.com/ (as a free PDF download or a paper book for $10). Since the PDF didn’t work too well on my Kindle, I sprung for the paper version. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the story here. Despite being self-published, there’s a full-quality story here, and a complex and humorous and yet coherent plot (save for one glaring but ultimately forgivable error). Even the illustrations, though amateurish, are still quite clever and fun. It’s quite unfortunate, then, that the presentation is kind of poor. Nearly all of the quotes and apostrophes are straight - is there any word processor on the planet which can’t do curly quotes anymore? There’s also some instances of “who’s” where it should be “whose,” and a paragraph that’s centered for no apparent reason. Even the typeface (which appears to be Times or Times New Roman) is not a good one for print. It’s too bad that such a good story has to be stuck with such an amateur presentation. Rating: Three gaslights out of five, though it could be an easy four if someone with a little knowledge of publishing cleaned it up (and that glaring continuity error was fixed).
Check out Professor Elemental's new video calling out Mr. B. stuffs going down. Tea, crumpets, and blood EVERYWHERE. http://www.professorelemental.com/fr_home.cfm
Professor Bargenbin claims to be a man of the people. Then why is he proposing to increase the airship registration tax by 75%? Mr Hornsworth proposes reducing the registration tax, as well as reinstating the Open Air Trade Act. Professer Bargenbin: He doesn't care about airship pilots. He doesn't care about you. paidforbycitizensforhornsworth1888. "I'm Phineas Hornsworth and I approve this message." Mr Hornsworth claims to support airship pilots. Then why does he want to reinstate the Open Air Trade Act of 1881, which increased air piracy by 400%? Even more sinister, in 1885, he proposed regulation requiring airship pilots to wear brass goggles at all times - while serving on the board of London's largest brass conglomerate. Phineas Hornsworth: Just another corrupt politician. paidforbyfriendsofbargenbin. "I'm Tigersbane Bargenbin and I approve this message."
The article >>325 links to was a JOKE, by the way. Stop being serious, people.
>>344 We'll take your retarded joke and turn it into a serious discussion of green technologies if we feel like it, douchebag.
>>325 OH GOD LOL
Does anyone plan on going/has gone to this that maybe feels like posting some pics?
ok /ste/ i need a project, has to work, and not too expensive. suggestions?
>>154 Maybe use a cutout facade of veneer or vinyl. Or go full electric and just use a block of wood made to look like a cigar box.
well fuck, im dissapointed /ste/.
>>338 What's so disappointing?
If it sounds reasonable. Lets talk about conventions. Have you ever attended a Steampunk convention or gathering? How was it? what was your take on the whole thing? What about Steampunks permeating other conventions? Unwanted nuisance or unique reprieve from the ordinary?
Ugh I wanted to go to steamcon but the tickets were outrageous on top of the bus fare to the event. Oh well...
>>335 I got in a fight with the IRS. They raped my bank account and now I have no money to go. Fucking government, shit sucks man.
I'm going to the Steampunk World Expo in May. Anybody else?
Today I was reading the comics in the newspaper, When I found this. I just felt like sharing.
>>270 >>Steampunk. It's Jules Verne meets Steve Jobs in the time of steam power. >>It's Jules Verne meets Steve Jobs in the time of steam power. >>Jules Verne meets Steve Jobs
>9000 hours in paint
>>329 WHERE ARE THE GEARS YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH GEARS
http://www.hulu.com/riese-kingdom-falling So, anyone else watching this? Steampunk internet TV show. Pretty good so far, though ten minute episodes leave a lot to be desired.
yeah... It's an alright attempt but IMHO it was really disappointing. It's terribly cliche and anything that could be considered steam punk follows the idea of "stick gears on it."
>>263 Sadly, that is 90% of steampunk. how many bits of steam-tech have you seen that follows the aesthetic and actually functions?
>>268 Yeah but that 10% is awesome. I'm all for all the media attention steampunk has been getting recently. but it feels more like producers are just trying to ride the name more than actually understanding the genre.
I'll just leave this here.
>>231 I need to finish playing that.
Gotta whip out my DS.
This game looks wicked fun.
Good Evening all you lovely people of /ste/ Let me start off by saying that the Steampunk community is generally full of awesome people. That being said, I thought it’d be funny to call out those pretenders whom seem to overpopulate Steampunk forums, imageboards, ect. The following is short list of the less amiable Steampunks you’ll meet.
>>237 One of the reasons I don't post with my mod powers enabled is I don't like to ram my position into people's faces, which sometimes ends up only pointing out the newfags
>>239 I respect that. It's a good way to run a site in my opinion. Also it's probably more fun for you because you get to post as just another Anonymous instead being identifiable as the owner/operator all the time.
>>240 Very noble of you sir. Very noble indeed >>238 Honestly I was just trying to be funny but so many people took it seriously that it degraded into mindless trolling. Hell I'll be the first to admit that I've fallen into almost all of those categories at some point or another.
