I'd definitely recommend the soundtracks of the game "Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura" and the movie "There Will Be Blood".

But if one was to venture forth in time a bit, to, for lack of a better term, (art) deco-punk, the soundtrack of the movie "2046", for example, might be better suited.

Here's some The Cog Is Dead. I really like the death of the cog, the rest is pretty hit or miss IMHO.

Abney Park, Vernian Process and Unextraordinary Gentlemen have a show in SF in October I'm going to try to get to: http://www.dnalounge.com/calendar/2010/10.html#08

The Clockwork Cabaret is a weekly radio show from a low-power FM back east that plays steamy music. Probably only three people actually listen to the show over the airwaves, but they make a podcast of the show so everyone can hear it. Search for it on iTunes or head here: http://clockworkcabaret.com/

In all honestly, I don't really know how to feel about it. The last album seemed a bit meh and short.

It might have been from the harddrive failing and them trying to redo everything.

oh? I didn't know something like that happened. I still thought it was pretty good, not their strongest album IMHO, but still good.

Yeah, a heatwave hit like a month before they were suppost to release the album. They didn't have a backup of the files so they had to redo the whole album. The good thing from it was they were able to do the songs with the new female vocalist.

Darcy James Argue's Secret Society presents Infernal Machine isn't half bad. I just found it yesterday and have been giving it a listen through the night.

To quote their site: Infernal Machines is the debut studio recording by New York’s acclaimed 18-piece steampunk bigband, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, a group the New York Times’ Nate Chinen describes as “calibrated for maximum intrigue, with a sound that suggests Steve Reich minimalism as well as orchestral jazz in the lineage of Bob Brookmeyer (one of Mr. Argue’s mentors).”

Agree that The Cog Is Dead is hit-and-miss, but I love The Copper War. It's like steam-outlaw-country.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is early industrial music. Not the stuff that was heavily dependent on electronics like Throbbing Gristle but the early material of say Einstürzende Neubauten or Test Dept which was mostly percussion and machinery. It's really easy to picture a steam driven industrial band with machines doing some of the work and some human percussionists banging on pipes and shit. One of the dudes from Neubauten was reportedly working on building drums that played themselves, though I don't know how far he got with that. Imagine a steam powered or even clockwork "drum machine" with actual drums being struck in a simple and methodical repeating pattern. It would be this big ugly fucking machine with steam and fire spewing out everywhere, making this enormous racket. How cool would that be?

Also, since synthesizers are automatically disqualified, such an ensemble would be required to include a flame throwing pipe organ:

I've found literally every other album, and even some other mixes. I honestly don't know if anyone still has it.

The only one I can find is the song that's the same name as the album and the band (because that doesn't make it hard to search for, right?)

I kind of dislike that Abney Park keeps not releasing the albums digitally for a few months. Robert claims that it's to help prevent piracy, but you know the first thing people do when they get the disk in their hands is to rip it so it's only preventing the chance of piracy for a few days (shipping).

All I would think it would do is cause them to loose sales and/or cause people to want to pirate it in the day and age of "instant gratification" of music purchases.
>> No. 179

>loose
lol

also; airship pirates concerned about digital piracy
lol
>> No. 181
Agreed that that's dumb, but are you sure it's the band that's made that decision and not their record label? Is someone, somewhere not aware that digital copies can be made from CDs? Hell, pirated copies of the disc can probably be found online the day *before* their new album goes on sale, if not sooner…

Also, yes, "loose" is the opposite of "tight," and "lose" is the opposite of "gain." Now that you know, please never ever ever make that mistake again (ever).
>> No. 182
>>181
If I recall correctly, they are their own record label (Post-Apocalypse Records) so it's more they just think it'll stop people from pirating it.

And I completely meant that the people who will buy the album would become loose from the airship and fall, so they couldn't buy the album. Yep.

Abney park is most definitely under their own indie label. And to be honest how can you blame an artist for trying to protect their intellectual property... even if in doing so turns them into materialistic corporate tools... IMHO its like a game; piracy vs "the man".

Also according to Firefly the legitimate purchase of said album may cause a harmful if not deadly plummet from an airship. I prospect that I for one am totally against. (See picture)

For the special enjoyment of /ste/, I took the DNA Lounge show and cut it up into tracks (and tagged it, and cover art'ed it) so it is more easily enjoyable on portable devices. As far as I know the tracks are properly tagged. Enjoy

A little mood music, The Spent Poets "You Can't Kill Michael Malloy"

Primus, "Over the Falls"

of Sherlock Holmes fame, "The Rocky Road To Dublin" by the Dubliners.

While I'm here, anybody know of any good, creepy, non-"punk" side of steampunkish music I can find? Think slightly askew barbershop quartet or honky tonk piano, string quartets and stuff.

Good little line up there. I especially like the last one by the Dubliners and, although most would bitch about how it isn’t Steampunk, IMHO it has a less gentry charm to it that I think just smacks of the freedom and fun that Steampunk really is about. And as per your request you should check these out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJop3yCsEU8 - Great music, great video, very creepy and very steampunk.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1mX8ptsmBM – again, a damn good video and good non-punk music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2MDaERkcsI – if you don’t like this, then you have the sense of humor of a rock with a broken soul.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTRrZcEsjFU – So try to imagine this being sung in the in a unison of drunken steam punks around a fire

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4eshdFCpOQ – Steampunk opera overture.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C90DVNVORw – BP is creepy. Funny but not terribly good.

Not sure if it's truly classed as Steampunk, but this guy is a legend and I feel that some of you might be able to appreciate him... especially if you're British.
