Having never worn scalemail I can't say for sure, but chainmail certainly I'd appreciate a gambeson if I was wearing it for any length of time. But I'm the kinda person that's waiting for them to invent pants with ass padding so anywhere you sit is a comfortable chair.

Yeah. Considering he won't be wearing it into actual battle, a full Gambeson isn't really necessary, though. I'd go with something a lot more breathable, say denim. Actually, if you just went out and got a old denim jacket, that could do the trick...and then, anywhere that's visible, you "steampunk" it up, by rolling thin garment leather over it, brown, most likely.
